FSA Eligible Baby Items - What’s Covered, What's Not, and Why?

For parents and parents-to-be, it's no secret babies are expensive. Luckily, you can use your FSA funds to help offset some of the costs and, thanks to the CARES Act passed in March 2020, the list of FSA eligible baby items is more inclusive than ever before. However, there seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding the details.

Determining Eligibility:

When it comes to FSA eligible baby items, a main difference between those that are covered, and those that are not, is how often they are used.  As a very general rule of thumb, items that are used daily are not eligible, while items that are used sporadically - like Active Skin Repair Baby Spray - are. This is because eligible items are mainly used to treat or prevent a condition. Of course, some FSA eligible baby items can be used daily, so to break this down further, let's look at a few examples:

Not FSA Eligible Items:

  • Diapers
  • Formula
  • Dental Floss
  • Breastfeeding Pillows
  • Bottles and Nipples
  • Baby Clothes
  • Baby Oil
  • Baby Powder

FSA Eligible Items:

  • Baby Sunscreens
  • Breast Pump and Related Supplies
  • Belly Wraps
  • Nasal Products
  • Teething Medication
  • Diaper Rash Ointment
  • Ear Drops
  • Moisturizing Lotion For Severely Dry Skin and Baby Eczema
  • Baby Electrolytes and Dehydration

Additionally, your FSA funds can help offset the costs of doctors bills and co-pays- two things there is sure to be a decent amount of.

If you find yourself stuck unsure about a product's eligibility, feel free to reach out and we'll gladly help you out- even if it's not a product we carry.
